UCX implementation[]

Hi! I’m Héctor, one of the Fandom Community Managers. I’m here to talk with you about the upcoming changes we will experiment on the wikis when the new UCX will be released. As a result, we’ll have to adapt the current content - mainly the design and implemented code - to ensure they’re compatible and operational.

Specifically talking, the UCX will mainly affect the Frontpage, the design (logo, background, favicon, themes), the CSS/JS used and some templates that should adapt their look to it. While the wiki will still be migrated some weeks later, I’m here to work alongside you to anticipate all the work regarding review, improvements and adaptation to the new skin.

If you agree, I’ll start soon, reviewing the mentioned elements and describing to you what work should be done. For the case of the design, I can work with the future version, that will be working once the wiki will be migrated. Regarding the frontpage, templates and the code, I can work and implement the changes now, to have them properly working both in the present and the future, but having all the changes done in advance.

Let me know if you have any comments about it and we can explore together the upcoming changes. Thanks! --CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 16:50, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi Héctor. Been a bit busy with work stuff of late, but if there's anything I can do to help with the updates (it's been awhile since I've edited the front page) please let me know. Arirthos (talk) 22:04, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi again! I've taken a quick look to the wiki in the UCX test version, and I have to admit it looks pretty well! Some stuff I've found:
The frontpage shows the Section 2 (right column) placed after section 1 (left column). You can make changes if you want, but it actually looks fine.
The infoboxes doesn't have their styling. Both content inside Hydra.css and Hydradark.css won't work with the UCX, so their content has to be moved to Common.css
Some templates and tables with custom background color for dark theme (like the tables in the Jaesa page or the Datacron navbox) don't fit with the light theme. --CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 12:35, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
So, to do:
Infobox styling to be moved from Hydra.css/Hydradark.css to Common.css?
The table template needs to be updated, then? Any suggestions on a more neutral colour for both dark/light theme? Is it possible to see an example of what light mode would look like with this wiki? Arirthos (talk) 01:26, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
Yes. You can move it to Common.css or Fandomdesktop.css (the new skin that will replace Hydra). There's actually no need to move all, but only they styling stuff you think will need to keep the customization for some templates (frontpage, infoboxes, navboxes, tables), as long as it will be compatible with both themes.
Regarding readability for both themes, you can basically do two options: trying to use neutral color for both - as you suggested - or adding variables for both themes. There will be a way to make them compatible with both themes.
In addition, another useful way I found and I applied on other wikis is to style the templates for a theme (in this case, dark) but instead of using concrete colors, using css variables based on the Theme Designer. With this, you can style a theme and the other will automatically be working with its alternative colors. Tell me what option you prefer and I can advance the work until you'll be able to check it.
Unfortunately, you're not able to see and test yet the UCX, but in some weeks the option will be available for the admins. CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 12:02, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
I copied over everything from Hydradark.css to the Common.css just to be safe. Honestly, when I did the CSS when I took over the wiki I cobbled together what I could. I'm by far no expert, sadly. lol. I'm sure there's a lot of unnecessary stuff in there given the amount of errors/notices I see in the edit UI that probably needs a professional eye to have a look and prune unnecessary bloat, but so long as nothing obviously breaks I think we're fine for now?
I can't recall if there is a way to identify any pages that use tables for me to go in and edit - I don't think most are based on any kind of template framework that we used. I wouldn't mind having a variable that changes based on theme, but in either event I'll have to do some looking when I have time to find the pages with tables. If you could set that up in CSS that would be great! Arirthos (talk) 02:43, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
I didn't check the MW pages yet. While it's fine for now, I'd suggest just the opposite. Keep all the customizations on Hydradark.css, and only move to Common.css or Fandomdesktop.css whatever we really want to include in the new skin. Then I can even change things, like using the same palette for templates but making some changes to have it compatible with both themes (light/dark), changing concrete colors by CSS variables (while you can still use these concrete colors for the current skin inside Hydradark).
If you agree, I'm doing the suggested change, and starting re-styling some stuff in FD.css for the new skin, with the main intention of making it compatible with both themes. --CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 10:35, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

I've been working a bit more on your wiki, and I can say it's almost done (except for important details I'm explaining now).

  • The frontpage now works perfectly after importing the code to fandomdesktop.css, and it suits fine with both themes.
  • Additionally, the infoboxes now are also styled (after the import) and if they use their classes, will work fine with both themes at the same time. I'm not sure if you have any infobox with additionaly custom code inside them or even in each page (affecting the design, basically the background, text and link colors), but I had that problem on other wikis before (feel free to check it).
  • While the navbox in the Jaesa page now works fine with both themes, unfortunately that's not the case for other templates and tables:
  • In the Jaesa page you have some tables, and they're using concrete colors in the page itself. That's a problem, because we can't define general colors for all and it basically affects the adaptation to the light theme. Same for the datacron template, for instance. You will have to change all the tables and templates that uses specific colors inside the pages, and change that codes for general classes. Then this classes can be defined with concrete colors (mainly for this skin) and for the UCX with CSS variables (to make them compatible with both themes). This is actually not a problem related only with the UCX, but this use is not recommended because it's later too difficult to make any change (for instance, if you would make some slight change to the general design). --CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 12:54, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi again! I've been talking with Alianin and we agreed she will be taking care of the remaining tables and templates. --CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 14:25, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, I was speaking with her briefly yesterday about it as well. Thanks for all the help! Arirthos (talk) 16:29, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Opt-in release[]

Hello again! As we have announced in our new blog, the opt-in exploration is available to you now! You can basically take a look at the main areas of the wiki, but as I explained the main things you should keep into account are the frontpage, the tables and their style, and other templates like infoboxes and navboxes. All of this, always thinking about the option of switching between the light and dark theme and all the content should be readable and adapted to both at the same time. In addition, all the wikis have to create a combination of colors for the light and dark theme, using the ThemeDesigner tool, and also re-upload the logo and favicon, and optionally the background (but it will work differently as header background, so it’s up to you what we’ll do with it on your wiki).

I already adapted the content and code to be compatible with FandomDesktop (the new skin), and also created the 2 themes and re-uploaded the assets. You can perfectly make any change to the ThemeDesigner and/or the Mediawiki pages, but I really encourage you to talk with me first. I’ve been adapting it, and I put some concrete stuff (colors in the ThemeDesigner, code in the MW pages and in one page but not another) for concrete reasons (basically to have all compatible with both themes), so to be more practical I think it’s better if we discuss about any proposal/issue/preference you could find/want before make changes. Thanks for everything! --CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 12:39, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

P.S.: Like we previously discussed, in the case of your wiki is not 100% adapted to the UCX. I found some tables with specific style on each page and also some navboxes with concrete style and not using classes (like in Jaesa Willsaam), but like we discussed Alianin is working on that.

Hey, sorry for the delay, work has been busy this week.
I'm good with discussing any changes, but I did notice a few oddities as I was navigating..
On pages like Jorgan's Scout Pants it doesn't appear to be showing the auto-categories built into the templates on the page (from the Jedipedia and SWTORData templates). Not sure if this is due to the template, CSS, or if it's an issue with the FandomDesktop?
On the History of a page, the highlighted sections are not synced with the theme of the page (it's white on default). Same when doing a comparison of page revisions. Can barely read it.
On editing the page, the header icons are washed out/hard to see. Again this may be due to the CSS?
Sidenote: Is there a way to use the Expand button wiki-wide without having to click it on every page? Arirthos (talk) 23:25, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
How the pages were categorized before? I've been checking the Template:Item_infobox and I didn't find orders to categorize the pages using it. In addition, if you go to Jorgan's page using Hydradark skin, it doesn't look the infobox is categorizing the page.
Regarding the diff change, it's a known and reported bug, and we expect to be fixed. Same for the header icons on the edit option.
You can have the full-width option set as default if you're a user. Just go to My preferences, Appearance and Content Width - Expanded. --CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 09:13, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
You know what? I'm being dumb. I forgot that I changed those categories to HIDDEN awhile back. *Facepalm.* Sorry!
Noted on the bugs and thanks for the tip on using the Expanded feature! I'll do some more poking around, but so far I don't see any glaring issues with the themes so far. Arirthos (talk) 16:17, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

FandomDesktop readiness[]

There is a new feature available for Gamepedia communities: Admin Dashboard This is a handy dashboard with links to a variety of admin tools. There is also a new feature added in here that will allow you to mark the wiki as ready for FandomDesktop. Whenever you're comfortable with how everything looks in FandomDesktop, click that button. If you run into any issues with how the content displays, feel free to ping me and I can take a look. I think I squashed the last of the old hardcoded templates, but there could be some I missed. --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 20:50, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Interesting. Are you sure that's fully setup?
1. I don't see a button to indicate readiness for FandomDesktop?
2. The Top Navigation link goes to MediaWiki:Wiki-navigation which doesn't seem to match up with what the current nav bar is showing (which I assume pulled data from MediaWiki:Sidebar which will no longer be needed in the new UCX, yeah?
3. Is the CSS link supposed to go to MediaWiki:Wikia.css? There doesn't appear to be anything there. Arirthos (talk) 23:30, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
Hello everyone! Alianin, as far as I know, I received other feedback from other admins like Arirthos about what they are talking. The Admin Dashboard for the Gamepedia wikis is showing the links to MediaWiki:Wiki-navigation for the nav, and MediaWiki:Wikia.css for the CSS page, as the Fandom wiki had with the Oasis skin.
Arirthos, the link Alianin said is a button in the right column of the Dashboard. The Gamepedia wikis typically use MediaWiki:Sidebar for the nav menu, and the CSS pages we're using are MediaWiki:Common.css (for all the skins) and MediaWiki:Fandomdesktop.css (only for the new page), as I shared with you before. --CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 12:43, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
Ah, I had the right bar automatically collapsed. That's why I didn't see it. LOL I'll poke around a bit more on the wiki before I give the go ahead. Is there a time limit? Also, should we remove the old CSS from hydradark/etc? Arirthos (talk) 14:04, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
I'm not sure if this is a cache issue, but I still see a lot of templates and tables (like in Jaesa Willsaam) without being readable in the light theme. We should re-define them, but before doing any kind of work, I would like to coordinate with you. CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 20:51, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
I see what you mean, we can definitely make some changes there. The default text is very unreadable against the blue background of our templates. Any initial suggestions, Alianin or VeRcEttI? Arirthos (talk) 21:58, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
I initially set the infoboxes and tables with CSS variables, but Alianin later made some changes and it causes these templates and tables are not adapted to the light theme. I prefer to let her make the adjustments to fit with your/her desired design choices. CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 05:50, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
I'll fix the light styling this weekend. --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 14:55, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
I made some updates to the light theme for accessibility and made the CSS adaptive to light or dark themes. I think we should be good now, but let me know if you run across any issues or want any tweaks and I'll fix them up. --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 18:50, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
I haven't noticed any further issues with the light theme so far, so I think we're good on that front.
I've updated MediaWiki:Wiki-navigation, but given the Gamepedia links and the move to the fandom URL, I'm feeling like we should update that. Are there fandom/generic equivalents to the options in the Gamepedia drop down or do those still function for now? Arirthos (talk) 19:57, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

Hello again. How do you feel with the current status of the wiki? Do you think we can mark it as ready? CuBaN VeRcEttI (Contact) 15:56, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

Everything seems good to be, so far. I've marked the wiki as ready. Arirthos (talk) 23:49, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Template infoboxes[]

The Template:Object infobox that i have just recently created on this wiki is not being displayed correctly; i have no idea how to fix this problem; so can you please fix it for me.Operep (talk) 18:31, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

The Template:Organization infobox that i have just recently created on this wiki is partially not being displayed correctly; i have no idea how to fix this problem; so can you please fix it for me.Operep (talk) 18:36, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

The Template:Government infobox that i have just recently created on this wiki is partially not being displayed correctly; i have no idea how to fix this problem; so can you please fix it for me.Operep (talk) 18:36, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Where did you pull the original templates from? Arirthos (talk) 19:05, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Can you please fix the display screen of the Template:Object, as well as the faction icon being displayed on that said template.Operep (talk) 07:53, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

I'll have a look. Please do not create or edit templates if you do not know how to use them. Arirthos (talk) 10:25, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

For unknown reasons the Galactic Republic icon not being displayed on the Template:Object, despite the fact that the name "Galactic Republic" is in the factions section that said template; can you please fix this problem; regarding why infection icon not being displayed, go to the Lightsaber article and you will see what i'm talking about.Operep (talk) 12:07, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

I created the Template:Object_icon in hopes that it would help display the images from the Template:Faction icon, on the Template:Object; but that didn't work.Operep (talk) 18:13, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Why do you need a Faction and Faction icon on an Object? Objects have no affiliation. Lightsabers can be used by anyone, Jedi or Sith.. Arirthos (talk) 18:17, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
What's the purpose of having an object infobox? --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 17:33, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
I'm still not sure we really need it. I get the feeling that they are under the impression this is Wookieepedia and are trying to mimic it? They did this with the old fandom version of SWTOR as well.
Side note, could you have a look at Template:Faction? I'm trying to clean it up a bit and remove some excess bloat and add in an infoboxdetails section, but I run into a lot of issues with the infoboxname section being flattened to one side and some extra code being shown when displayed. Below is a rough example of what I'm trying to do and clearly failing.
<includeonly>{| class="infobox"

Will the original Star Wars: The Old Republic Wiki ever be unlocked; for editors who do not have administrator or bureaucrat status Go to the original wiki and you will know what i am talking about; https://swtor-archive.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Old_Republic_Wiki.Operep (talk) 19:20, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

No. It exists to have information pulled over that doesn't exist here and will eventually be shut down. Arirthos (talk) 19:29, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

I can't understand what you are actually trying to tell me; regarding Community content is available under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 unless otherwise noted, even after i went to the Community content website; so can you please be very specific and be very clear about what you are trying to tell me.Operep (talk) 20:49, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

What Arirthos is saying is that the wiki is in an archived state and at some point it will cease to exist; if you want to contribute to this wiki, feel free to coordinate with us and propose changes, but ultimately the other wiki isn't going to return to an active state.
