Forum index > Non-official videos

Today a YouTube datacron video guide was posted to the Alderaan article. With the multitude of non-official videos appearing on the internet we should probably begin considering how we are going to use them within this project, if at all.

This particular video was a VisoGames video supported by TGN. Because we haven't made any decision to support TGN's WAY movement or VisoGames, for the moment I removed the video. What type of non-official videos should we support the inclusion of within our articles? The WAY movement is designed to enable video producers to turn their hobby into a profession; when the for-profit nature of the videos is considered, can/should we even consider supporting them? What sort of quality control should we demand from non-official videos that appear here? What sort of credit and usage notices should these videos include? It's a lot to consider, but probably something we should takle as the number of fan-made videos will only continue to climb in the coming months. -- Heaven's Agent 17:12, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Good questions. I admit copyright isn't a strength of mine. How would these videos be handled considering what copyright we are using on this project? Does Curse have any type of stance on this? Do the videos themselves have any usage guidelines? That aside, I think we should only include official videos and possibly strategy type videos. Videos that provide a meaningful addition to the project and don't duplicate what we've already documented. We want to avoid a wall of videos with very little content on articles. --Icon class jediknight Alianin T C 20:30, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
We would prefer to not post videos that are produced by competing networks. Any video from the Curse network here are acceptable. If you have specific areas you'd like to see covered by Curse, please ask, and I will see if our video team can get something done. Videos created by wiki users are acceptable, though throughout the development of the wiki, we stayed with only officially released videos. I think better questions to ask would be:
  1. Where are videos appropriate?
  2. What content should videos contain?
For instance, should videos only be used to visually demonstrate the textual content of an article? Should there be voiceovers? Should there be subtitles? For disputes, how should videos be judged and by whom?
This can become a slippery slope, as video producers will argue that their personal video is better than someone else's, and will also try to post videos not with the best interest of the wiki in mind, but simply to boost their personal video hits. Obviously videos that have overt requests to "subscribe" should be avoided. On other wikis, I've seen this become an administrative nightmare of constant revert wars between video producers.
As for copyright issues, copyright as always belongs to the original creator of the video (who should be the one posting it on the wiki) however, by posting it on the wiki, they are also releasing it for use under CC-by-NC-SA 3.0. -- Wynthyst File:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 02:41, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
I've suffered through the video regulation nightmare on several past projects myself. Perhaps the best thing to do is also the simplest: only allow non-official videos that are produced by Curse, by us (or for us, should we ever decide to bring in video teams for specific projects), or by DarthHater (I can easily see them getting into more tutorial/guide videos, and should they do so I want to support them fully). It would eliminate much of the headache before things even come up.
I would argue some freedom for a single recruitment video on a guild page. That said, we should be very specific about several things: The video would be released under the CC license we utilize on this project, and as such the content of the video need to conform to the restrictions of the license. They wouldn't be able to use music not released under the license. They'd have to provide proper credit to the creators of the source content. They would have to conform to Bioware's and LucasArt's guidelines for utilizing game content and footage in such a manner. In the case of questionable content in such a video it would be deleted, and it would fall to the creator to justify that content's inclusion before the video is added again.
Or we can simply disallow recruitment vids as well. What are everyone's preferences? -- Heaven's Agent 04:02, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
Guild space is totally separate (that's why we created the Guild namespace) and mainspace rules need not apply. I have no problem with guilds adding videos to their guild pages. Not just recruitment, but also team play videos, etc... That is their space. The rules/policy should be designed with the mainspace forefront. I also agree that videos produced by Darth Hater should also be allowed and promoted. Official videos from Bioware/EA are also always acceptable. -- Wynthyst File:User Wynthyst sig icon.png talk 19:38, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
We will need to set some guidelines for content in the guild name space, regarding boht videos and general content. Allowing these guidelines to be separate and distinct from the general project guidelines, though, sounds fine to me. Guilds should have a little more freedom in what they add to their own space.
I would also like to keep the possibility open to support specific webcasts on a case-by-case basis. This would be the exception, rather than the rule, and something everyone here would need to discuss before allowing. Obviously these would be special cases: non-profit projects that publish under CC BY-NC-SA and don't directly compete with Curse while presenting information from a neutral point of view. Videos that support these guidelines will be hard to find, but there are bound to be some that do so in the long run. When such a publisher stands out from the rest, we should feel free to bring those videos to everyone's attention and consider how/if we should consider supporting and including them on the project. -- Heaven's Agent 15:11, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
